New VW Polo Blue Motion

The old Polo Bluemotion was the most economical car in Britain but it drove like it. This year's European Car of the Year has now included the second-generation Polo Bluemotion.
The latest model includes some new technology as well as refinements of existing features. Technical highlights include a gearchange indicator with optimised gear ratios, which saves about 3-8 grams of CO2 per kilometre (depending on how hard you drive, of course), optimised aerodynamics including a lower ride height and blanked air ducts, worth between 1-2g/km, regenerative braking that recharges the battery on over-run (2-3g/km), low-rolling resistance tyres (2-4g/km) and a start/stop system (4-8g/km).
The old Polo Bluemotion had a 1.4-litre engine that could manage 72mpg Combined, emitted 99g/km of CO2 and had a 715-mile range.
This new model''s equivalents are 83.1mpg Combined, 90g/km of CO2 and range of 840 miles.

New Vauxhall Astra

While the outgoing five-door Astra wasn't ugly, it was a safe and a little boring. The new Astra has an Insignia-inspired look that looks terrific.
It is also 1cm taller, about 3cm wider, with a front track that is 6cm wider and a 7cm wider rear track. The boot has the same 375-litre capacity, but with no clutter from the rear dampers thanks to a wider track. The new model is around 60kg heavier than the outgoing model.
The dashboard has been lowered and moved forward away from the driver, which improves the visibility and driving position as well as giving a feeling of spaciousness. The storage space has been heavily revised to make it more useful and the rear-seat accommodation is large enough for three large adults for a long journey.
The Astra will be the first GM product to use a new 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which in effect replaces the current car’s 1.8-litre unit.
The 1364cc engine has the same output as the 1.8, with 138bhp, but has 170lb ft of torque, which will give it a diesel-like surge but with petrol engine responses.
The rest of the petrol engine range will include a 99bhp 1.4 (not related to the new turbo unit) and a 177bhp turbocharged 1.6 shared with the Insignia. There will be four diesels: a 1.3 with 94bhp, a 1.7 with 108bhp and two 2.0-litre units, shared with the Insignia, with 128bhp and 157bhp.
The new Astra has a combined fuel economy up to 67.3mpg and CO2 emissions from 109g/km.
