Use Fuel Efficiently

10 Tips to save money and the planet at the same time.

The rise in fuel prices might be creating havoc with company travel budgets but the effects can be mitigated by using fuel efficiently.

There might be some irony as these efficient driving tips are offered by the European Petroleum Industry and the European Commission, however we've calculated that using fuel efficiently could save you up to £200 a year in petrol or diesel. And with fuel prices rising all the time, it could save you even more in the future.

Adopting a fuel efficient style is easy. And once you've mastered it, not only will you start to make real savings, but you'll also be doing your bit for the environment. That's because your car will produce less carbon dioxide (CO2), the main gas contributing to climate change.

Follow the 10 tips and your company car drivers will soon be saving money and reducing your car fleet's impact on the environment.

For example while each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), mpg usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.

As a rule of thumb, you can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional 10 pence per gallon for your fuel (2.2p per litre).

Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes fuel. It can lower your mpg by 33 percent at motorway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than fuel.

Another tip  is to avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your mpg by up to 2%. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle's weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.

If you are about to order a new car remember that selecting which vehicle to purchase is the most important fuel economy decision you'll make.

We will be able to advise which makes and models are the most fuel efficient and also which will save money on the driver's benefit in kind costs.
