Dear ~~NAME~~ Children In and Around Cars Accidents are the most frequent cause of death among children, and car accidents are the leading cause, around 40 per cent of all accidents. Children inside a car, who are not fastened with a seat belt or who are not placed in an appropriate sized and correctly fitted child seat, may be seriously injured or even die in a car accident. The relatively large weight of their heads, as they're thrown forward, makes them particularly vulnerable. Even if a car itself is not involved in an accident, children can face danger inside a car even when it is not moving. The golden rule is never to leave a child unattended in a vehicle. In the summer, one of the dangers for children inside cars is hyperthermia, which is excessive exposure to heat causing death. When a child is intentionally left in a hot car or accidentally locks himself in the car, this condition can set in as quickly as 10 minutes. Even leaving a window open slightly does not help. There are also other dangers inside a car to an unsupervised child. Automatic electric windows, especially on older models in the UK can cause accidental injuries to children. Responsibly, manufacturers have made many changes to their models to prevent injuries to children inside the car. Replacement of key based ignitions with start buttons methods of starting vehicles are changing, with push buttons, rather than a key, becoming more commonplace which prevents a small child starting the car. On some vehicles this method of starting is combined with an electronic parking brake that is automatically activated when the vehicle starts. Children are also at risk around cars either crossing the road or even at home in the driveway. It is estimated, one third of children under the age of six, who are involved in motor vehicle accidents each year, are killed in yards, car parks and driveways. One and two year olds are most likely to be killed or injured in home driveways. These toddlers can be impossible to see if they are directly behind a car. The vehicle is usually moving slowly and is often being driven by a parent, relative or friend with devastating consequences. For peace of mind we have prepared a comprehensive fact sheet to help inform drivers of the potential risks. To learn more, contact us now for the full fact sheet sheet 'CHILDREN IN AND AROUND CARS'.
